Transient Towpath Trudging - Pt.83

With the local rivers all out of sorts to get that fishing fix I decided to venture to a stretch of local canal to try and catch what ever was going. A sleeper Zander deadbait rod and the mainstay would be float fished bread, maggots or worms, with bread slop as feed.

I caught some cracking fish over the years from here from big hybrids (4lb), big roach (1lb 12 oz), pike, zander, carp oh the inevitable decent bream. The boats are infrequent at this time of year but I've found the sport doesn't really pick up unless we have some continuous periods of cold weather, rather than the wet and miserable weather we are having at the moment. 

It was a lovey morning indeed and despite it being cold when the sun came out it was very pleasant. It took a while for the first bite which came from a schoolie zander that took a small roach just off the far bank next to some reeds. A pretty lacklustre fight too, which surprised me as they usually go mad when hooked. 

Usually the stretch is good for a bite on the float but for some reason there was nothing doing whatsoever and when the sun came out making the float was difficult to see, I decided to get on the rove.

It's surprising just how much walking is required to get from spot to spot and I've always wondered if staying in one spot would have been the best way to go. I fished 3 swims in the end and fish was suspicious in their absence throughout the near four hours I was out fishing.

Even scaling down and fishing maggot didn't bring any dips of the float and left me wondering what I was doing wrong. As I moved to the last swim and retraced my steps two cormorants were disturbed and vacated the area they were feeding in. They wouldn't have helped I'm sure, got to get the excuses in !! So overall a little disappointing I must admit !!!
